If you don't know the chords just play the bottom note. Don't take it too seriously, just enjoy it and keep trying. This is the key to music in general. Make sure you have your media player on repeat. This means you will get right into the song. When I first record something that I really like, I listen to it over and over. Each time through you will hear new aspects of the song. Most pop songs or jazz standards are only about 4 minutes long. To get to know each one you are going to have to spend a long time in that 3 minutes. About here the issue of boredom may come up. In my experience, you will get "bored" with a song long before you get good at it. What do I mean by this?? Just forge past any feelings of boredom and give the song a fair amount of time. How long is a fair amount of time to spend in 3 minutes of someone else's life? Well it depends what you can stand. Obviously the longer the better. I could spend 20 minutes on a song repeating no worries. The main thing is that you don't overdo it. If you overdo it, you won't go back to your instrument or that song for a while. This is obviously not ideal. If you do overdo your practice the way you realise may simply be that you notice with dismay that you have not played your instrument for ages.
